Essay Series: "Mortal Morsels" by Ken Courtney

Friday, November 6, 2009 | Published in | 2 comments

This week's essay, written by Ken Courtney, is entitled "Mortal Morsels." A writer at heart, Ken can be found behind the bar and on the floor at one of Portland's most acclaimed restaurants, Bar Lola.

Ken, a sincere and unrelenting lover of food, tells the story of a peculiar day of surfing which nullifies his passion for a short yet disheartening period of time. It isn't until later in the evening, joined by his colleagues, a bottle of beer and a couple of oysters that Ken snaps back into reality as he reconnects with the intense power of the ocean he experienced earlier in the day, and thus his love of food.

Again, I would like to welcome anyone who is interested in being a part of the series to submit an essay.

Rules & Details:
  • Each essay must be one to three pages in length.
  • Even if in the most backwards way possible, the essay must involve a culinary experience (of ANY kind) and Maine. Use your imagination - that's the whole point!
  • No "My Favorite Place For Bacon And Eggs." The intention of these essays is for them to be less about food per-say and more about the author. In other words, voyeuristic in the same vein as a typical memoir.
Please don't hesitate to contact me if interested.

Mmm, surfing makes me hungry... not actually surfing, just thinking of surfing. :) Love the essay and I can now say I'm glad I went first!
